Joseph Wang is SAIC Endowed Chair, Distinguished Professor, Director of the UCSD Center of Wearable Sensors, and Chair of the Department of Nanoengineering at University of California, San Diego. Prof. Wang's research interests include nanomotors and nanorobots, nanomedicine, wearable on-body sensors and biofuel cells, flexible and stretchable materials, bioelectronic detection of proteins and nucleic acids, management of diabetes, remote sensing, the development of techniques for ultra trace measurements and of on-line flow detectors. He has authored over 1000 research papers (h-index 121), 35 patents, 40 chapters and 12 books. Prof. Wang has presented more than 300 invited and plenary lectures and has been awarded many prestigious international awards. He is currently serving as the Chief-Editor of the international journal Electroanalysis and has served on the Editorial Board of several major international journals.





WALCARIUS “Electrogenerated, nanostructured and functionalized silica thin films for electroanalysis”

Alain Walcarius

Alain Walcarius received his PhD degree in 1994from the University of Namur, Belgium. After a postdoctoral stay in the Joe Wang group in New Mexico State University (USA) and a second one in the Jacques Bessièreteam at Université Henri Poincaré Nancy I (France), he joined the CNRS in 1996 as a Research Associate. He is currently Senior Researcher at CNRS and Director of the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry and Microbiology for the Materials and the Environment (Nancy, France) where his analytical and electroanalytical chemistry group works in the area of chemical reactions at solid/liquid interfaces. One can situate his main research interests at the intersection between electrochemistry, analytical chemistry, and materials science, with special focus to sol-gel and mesoporous materials as electrode modifiers.Alain Walcarius is co-author of about 230 scientific publications and he gave ca. 80 invited lectures. He is member of the Editorial board of Electroanalysis, and Fellow of the International Society of Electrochemistry.




MACHEPHRSON“Challenges associated with the development, application and commercialisation of label-free electrochemical sensors”

Julie V. Macpherson

Julie V. Macpherson is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Warwickand currently also a Royal Society Industry Fellow. Her current work is associated with the development of electrochemical based sensors for the monitoring of solution species, with a particular focus on the use of carbon materials. Previous research looked at the development and application of high resolution electrochemical imaging techniques to image and quantify surface heterogeneity at the nanoscale. She has published over 170 peer reviewed publicationssince 1993 (H index 46) and has filed 15 patents.
She has won the departmental award for best teacher four times and was also named best teacher within the University (2009). She was presented with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Marlow Medal in 2005 for the most meritorious contributions to physical chemistry or chemical physics and the McBain medal (RSC and Society of Chemical Industries) for meritorious contribution to colloid and interface science in 2006. In 2016 was named as one of the Top 50 Women in Analytical Science by The Analytical Scientist magazine and in 2017 was awarded the Royal Society Innovation award, aimed at providing funding for the development of a proven concept through to a near market ready product. She has given over 50 invited talks at national and international conferences and is currently the Co-Director of the Centre for Diamond Science and Technology (which has eight participating universities in the UK).

Serge G. Lemay

Serge G. Lemay was born in Rimouski, Canada, in 1970. He received an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering with minor in Physics from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 1993, and a Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell University, USA, in 1999. He was faculty at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, from 2001 to 2009. In 2009 he founded the Nanoionics group at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, University of Twente, The Netherlands. Having worked earlier in the fields of optoelectronics, solid-state physics, molecular electronics and biophysics, his research in the last decade has become increasingly focused on exploring the combination of electrochemistry and nanofabricated fluidic devices. His main research interests at present range from the fundamentals of electron transfer and mass transport to bioelectronic applications of electrochemistry; specific experimental systems include electroosmosis in nanochannels, high-frequency impedance spectroscopy at nanoelectrodes, and electrochemical nanofluidics.

Aziz Amine has been Head of Department of Chemical Engineering and Environment of the Hassan II University of Casablanca during the period 1999-2003. Professor Amine’s research over the last 25 years has focused on sensors and biosensors and there use in Analytical Chemistry. He is author of more than 120 papers and has served as coordinator of several national and international research projects. He is a reviewer for several scientific international journals. He is one of the Editors of the International Journal “Biosensors and Bioelectronics” published by Elsevier with Impact Factor 7.5 and Chairman of the International Workshop “Biosensors for Food Safety and Environmental Monitoring” organized every two years in Morocco ( He was invited speaker in several international congresses. Susana Campuzano received her PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain) in 2004. Since 2005 she works as Assistant Professor at the Analytical Chemistry Department of the Chemistry Faculty of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid where she collaborates in the “Electroanalysis and Electrochemical (Bio)sensors” research group headed by Prof. J.M. Pingarrón. During 2008 and 2009, she stayed as Post-Doc in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Infection Biology at the Center for Biological Research in the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations in Madrid. Then, from January 2010 to July 2011, she moved to the research group of Prof. J. Wang at the Department of Nanoengineering in UCSD (USA), where she worked as a Research Scholar. Her areas of interest include the development of enzymatic, immuno and DNA electrochemical sensors and advanced nanomachines. She has authored over 140 research papers, 12 book chapters, 7 Patents and more than 110 Contributions to National and International Conferences. Her h-index is 33.

MIROSLAV“Electrochemistry of natural and chemically modified nucleic acids: Effects of DNA structure and bioanalytical applications”

Miroslav Fojta

Miroslav Fojta (born 1967) studied biochemistry at Charles University in Prague and earned his PhD (1995) in biophysics at the Institute of Biophysics (IBP), Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Brno with Prof. E. Paleček. At the IBP he obtained also his postdoctoral training. He started his independent research at the IBP at the end of 1990s and became the head of the Department of Biophysical Chemistry and Molecular Oncology from 2005. In the same year he finished his habilitation at the Masaryk University in Brno where he teaches as an Associate Professor. Miroslav Fojta is a recipient of the Wichterle Premium and the Prize of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic. His current research interests include electrochemistry of nucleic acids, chemical modification of biopolymers and its application in analysis of nucleotide sequences, DNA damage and protein-DNA interactions.

Ulla Wollenberger

Ulla Wollenberger studied Biology and Biophysics at the Humboldt University , Berlin and received her PhD in Enzymology from the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in 1984. She worked as a post doc and staff scientist at the Central Institute for Molecular Biology, Max-Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (Berlin, Germany), New Mexico State University (Las Cruces, NM, USA) and Fraunhofer Institute of Silicon Technology (Berlin, Germany). In 1994 she joint the Institute for Biochemistry and Biology at the University of Potsdam (Department of Analytical Biochemistry). Since 2008 she is Professor at University of Potsdam and is head of a laboratory in the Department of Molecular Enzymology . Her main research interests are biosensors and bioelectrocatalytic devices, coupled enzyme systems, protein electrochemistry, bioelectrocatalysis, and spectroelectrochemistry. These research topics have been funded by several national and international integrated projects and are summarized in more than 150 scientific peer reviewed papers, a number of book chapters and one text book. She frequently acts as referee in international scientific journals such as Angewandte Chemie, Analytical Chemistry, Electroanalysis, Biosensors and Bioelectronics, Bioelectrochemistry, Electrochemistry Communication, ACS Catalysis etc. She acts as editorial board member of the Journal Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry. Presently, she is PI in the Unicat Center of Excellence “Unifying Concepts in Catalysis” (Berlin, Germany) and in the scientific advisory board of the Leibniz-Institute for innovative Microelectronics (IHP - Frankfurt/ Germany).




JENY“2D and 3D microfluidic system for cell and organ on a chip applications”

Jenny Emneus,

Jenny Emnéus pursued her academic career at Lund University, Sweden and was recruited as a Professor at DTU Nanotech in 2007 where she leads the LOC strategic field and Bioanalytics group. She has coordinated 7 EU projects and currently has two Marie Curie ITN projects in H2020, one of which she is the coordinator (Training4CRM. She has served as an evaluator and expert panel member of e.g. Swedish Research Council, EU FP7 projects for the environment program and is since 2012 a member of the LS9 panel for ERC starting grant. She has vast experience of development and application of biosensors and 2D and 3D LOC devices. Her main research interest is focused on microfluidic bioassay systems (enzymes, antibodies and cells) using multi-parameter detection systems (optical and electrochemical), and organ-on-a chip system and 3D scaffolds for tissue engineering.
